To the common person, coarse aggregate may simply look like broken stone. In concrete, however, it performs a much more important role.

Coarse aggregate forms a major portion of concrete. It contributes volume, provides the granular framework of the concrete and influences the amount of cement paste required to surround the particles.

If cement is the binder, coarse aggregate can be thought of as the skeleton of concrete.

Why is coarse aggregate important?

Coarse aggregate contributes to the overall stability and structure of concrete. Its characteristics can influence strength, durability, shrinkage behaviour, workability and economy.

Because aggregate occupies a large part of the concrete volume, its selection also has an economic significance. Suitable aggregate can help create an efficient particle system without unnecessarily increasing the amount of cement paste required.

But economy should never mean selecting the cheapest stone available. The aggregate must first be suitable for the intended concrete.

What should we look for?

1. Size

Aggregate size must be appropriate for the structural member and the available space within it. A particle that is too large for the member or reinforcement arrangement can create difficulties in placing and proper consolidation.

2. Shape

Aggregate particles may be angular, rounded, flaky or elongated. Shape influences packing, workability and the interaction between aggregate and cement paste.

A good-looking stone is not automatically a good concrete aggregate.

3. Surface texture

The texture of the aggregate surface affects the way the cement paste interacts with the particles. Surface characteristics can therefore influence the behaviour of the concrete.

4. Strength and durability

The aggregate itself must be capable of performing in the intended environment. Concrete durability is not determined by cement alone; the durability of the aggregate is also relevant.

5. Cleanliness

Clay, excessive dust and other undesirable materials can interfere with the concrete system. Aggregate should therefore be sufficiently clean and should satisfy the applicable requirements.

6. Water absorption

Aggregate can absorb water. This matters because the water contained within or on the aggregate can influence the effective water available to the concrete and therefore its behaviour.

7. Grading

Grading refers to the distribution of different particle sizes. A well-graded aggregate system can pack more efficiently, reducing excessive voids between particles.

This is one reason aggregate should not be considered simply as “stone filling.”

Does the source matter?

Yes.

The same nominal type of aggregate can behave differently depending on its geological source, processing, crushing method and quality control.

For this reason, aggregate should not be selected merely because it is available nearby or because it looks hard.

For a house project, the aggregate should be checked against the applicable requirements for size, grading, cleanliness, strength, durability, absorption and other relevant properties. Where testing or certification is required, those should form the basis of acceptance rather than visual judgement alone.

A question homeowners often ask

“Can we use any good-looking stone for concrete?”

Not necessarily.

A stone may look hard, clean and attractive and still require technical evaluation before being used in structural concrete. A reliable source and consistent quality are therefore important.

Similarly, changing the aggregate source during a project without considering its characteristics can affect the consistency of the concrete.

Why does aggregate affect economy?

Aggregate is a large component of concrete by volume. If the aggregate system is appropriate and well graded, it can contribute to an efficient concrete mixture.

This does not mean that aggregate should be selected solely to reduce cement consumption. The objective is to achieve the required performance with suitable materials and appropriate proportions.

The homeowner's practical takeaway

When reviewing materials for a house, it is reasonable to ask:

        Where is the aggregate coming from?

        Is it suitable for structural concrete?

        Is its quality consistent?

        Is it clean?

        Is its size and grading appropriate?

        Is the material supported by the required quality checks?

These questions are simple, but they help move the decision away from appearance and price towards suitability.

The stone in concrete is not simply filler. It forms an important part of the concrete's internal framework, and its size, shape, grading, cleanliness and durability can influence the finished material.
