Fine aggregate, commonly referred to as sand, is one of the most familiar materials on a construction site. For many homeowners, however, the discussion often ends with a simple question: “Which sand should we use?” The more useful question is: What characteristics should the fine aggregate have for the concrete we require?
Fine aggregate is not simply a material added to fill space. Its particle size, grading, cleanliness, shape and consistency can influence the behaviour and quality of concrete.
What does fine aggregate do?
Fine aggregate occupies the spaces between coarse aggregate particles. It forms an important part of the overall particle-size system of concrete and contributes to the behaviour of fresh concrete.
Its characteristics can influence:
● workability
● finishing
● water demand
● pumpability
● particle packing
● the amount of cement paste required.
If the fine aggregate is poorly graded or contains excessive undesirable material, the concrete may require more water or paste to achieve the desired workability.
Appropriately graded and clean fine aggregate can contribute to better particle packing and a more consistent concrete system.
Natural sand and manufactured sand
Natural sand and manufactured sand are both used in concrete.
Manufactured sand is produced by crushing and processing suitable rock to obtain fine aggregate with the required characteristics. With appropriate quality control, it can be used successfully in concrete.
The important question is therefore not simply:
“River sand or manufactured sand?”
It should be: “Is the selected fine aggregate suitable, properly graded, clean and consistent for the intended concrete?”
The source name alone does not determine quality.
What should be considered when selecting fine aggregate?
Grading
The distribution of particle sizes is important. Fine aggregate that is too coarse, too fine or poorly graded can influence water demand and workability.
Cleanliness
Fine aggregate should not contain excessive clay, silt, organic matter or other undesirable substances. Unwanted material can interfere with the behaviour of concrete.
Particle shape and texture
The shape and surface characteristics of the particles can influence how the aggregate packs and how the concrete behaves when fresh.
Water absorption
Fine aggregate can absorb water. This needs to be understood when considering the effective water available in the concrete.
Consistency of source
A consistent source helps maintain more consistent concrete properties. Significant changes in the fine aggregate source or characteristics should not be treated as inconsequential.
Why does sand affect water demand?
Imagine trying to arrange particles of very different sizes into a compact mass. The way those particles fit together determines how many spaces remain between them.
Fine aggregate is part of that arrangement.
Poor particle packing can create more voids and may require additional paste or water to obtain the desired workability. This is one reason fine aggregate is an engineered component rather than simply a material added by volume until the concrete “looks right.”
A common site misconception
A frequent practical temptation is to adjust the amount of sand based on how the concrete looks or feels.
That is not a reliable basis for selection.
The quantity of fine aggregate forms part of the engineered proportioning of the concrete. Increasing or decreasing it for convenience can affect the balance of the concrete mixture.
Similarly, a sand that appears clean to the eye may still require technical evaluation for grading and undesirable fines.
What should a homeowner ask?
When selecting fine aggregate for a home project, a homeowner can ask:

● Is it suitable for concrete?
● Is the grading appropriate?
● Is the material clean?
● Is the quality consistent?
● Does it meet the applicable requirements?
These questions do not require specialist knowledge, but they encourage better material decisions.
